Trail of Danger by Valerie Hansen
2.0
This is book 6 in the True Blue K-9 series. Each book is written by a different author. I haven't read/listened to the other ones. This stood well on its own.
Honestly, until about 75% this was a 4-star book. I enjoyed the set-up, the fact that it's faith based but the author isn't smashing readers over the head with Bible verses or prayers every other paragraph, as well as Reed and Abigail.
Amnesia plot lines are often kind of wonky and I liked that Hansen didn't have Abigail's memory return in one giant, "Ah ha!". Small parts trickled in, which seemed much more realistic and moved the story along.

My biggest complaints started when
Additionally, her victim advocacy is awful. Telling a recently rescued child it's their responsibility to physically return to where they were being held and to save the other victims is horrid. Then calling the obviously terrified child names. Gross.
"She couldn’t let anything stop the rescue. There were some things that took precedence over the sentiments of a pouting, sniffling, uncooperative adolescent, and this was one of them."
The ending was completely unrealistic - both from the mystery/suspense aspect and from the relationship side. More spoilers:
Narration:
I picked this because I was looking for books narrated by Cici Dee. I loved her performance.
CW (spoilers):
the culmination of the plot is a human trafficking ring.

Abigail repeatedly put herself in dangerous situations she had no reason to be in. Reed would complain and say no and then basically just go along with it. TSTL is my biggest pet peeve in romantic suspense. Then - Abigail is supposedly a former street kid who went on to get a degree to specifically support unhoused/runaway youth and she's purported to have been doing it a while... yet she doesn't understand the signs of human trafficking?Additionally, her victim advocacy is awful. In the last chapter alone Abigail puts herself in two different TSTL scenarios while completely disregarding Reed's commands. Putting herself and others in severe danger. Then. After just spending a few days hanging out - these two are engaged and adopting one of the rescued kids. There's barely enough interaction in this story to justify a first date much less marriage.Narration:
