Frizzy by Claribel A. Ortega
4.0
I loved this book. While I'm far from dominican or black (I'm asian) and my hair is straight as a ruler, this book was incredibly relatable. Even though we didn't spend much time with any character (perfectly paced---dont get me wrong. I just miss the characters alreadyyyy), I grew unthinkably attached to them.
Now for the complaint.... vvv
The only thing that stops this amazing book from getting a 4.5star or 4.75star is how they portrayed JESUS.
It was completely unneeded to make Him out to be a cold and mean Guy in a scene where Ortega could've expanded even more on Marlene's character/views and relationships. (Waste of panel space when Ortega couldve done something NOT offhandedly-offensive)
I know that Ortega only made Jesus give Marlene a dirty look, but still. What if it where Muhammed instead? Or Allah? What if it was Buddha or a Hindu deity? I'll bet $1000 that if it were anyone else, this book wouldve never been published.
P. S. Jesus was Arab (from Israel, which is in the Middle East). He could've even had the same hair as Marlene since we don't know what we looks like <3
