The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
5.0
Last year, a few people recommended this book to me, telling me it was super good. It's not really a genre I'm super interested in (fantasy), but I bought it as a gift for a friend and decided I'd read it before I gave it. So glad I did. This was one of my favorite books I've read in awhile. The beginning was a bit slow, and I was a bit bored by the flashbacks initially, but once I got further in, it started to really grip me. I loved the descriptions. I often underline books when I read them, marking just some of my favorite lines or descriptions that stand out to me, and I was underlining a whole lot in this book. The book was interesting in terms of plot, and I was such a big fan of the writer's style and the way it felt like I knew Addie through the descriptions, even though the book was in third person. I enjoyed the way the author could get away with these gorgeous and complicated lines because the character herself had been alive so long and was such a fan of art. It all came together in a way I found really compelling. I also really loved the short length of the chapters. Especially lately, my attention span has been kind of garbage, so having short chapters made me feel like I was making lots of progress through the book, even if I was only moving ahead a few pages, which is honestly always a great feeling. Overall, I've been trying to be stingy with my 5-star ratings, but I think it'd be dishonest to give this one anything less than 5 stars when I liked it as much as I did. I think this book would appeal to people who are interested in any genre of book, but maybe that's just because I sort of adored the writing. Definitely recommend!
