A victorian science fiction novel based on the risks of scientific experimentation and traveling through time. I enjoyed the author's imagination of how he thought the future of the human race would develop, the potential evolution of humans, and the ultimate end of civilization. It had a surprising commentary on class development (the haves and the have not's) and what would happen to those humans who develop a complete idol lifestyle. This is my third H.G.Wells (my first being the invisible man and second The Island of Dr. Moreau) and I enjoyed it a lot more than the invisible man and is on par with The Island of Dr. Moreau, it was descriptive and impactful often moving between lyrical and jarring quickly. It is fast-paced while also being told as a recollection. It is interesting how much modern-day time travel stories have in comment with one of the first of the genre. It had the feeling and atmosphere of a cross between Star Trek and Dr. Who but based in a victorian men's club. But please go into this understanding it is a product of its time, it is not PC and does include two slurs (which could have been removed from the re-print at it does not affect the story at all.)
