Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

5.0

This book had long been on my TBR list and I kept my eye on it throughout all of last fall. I was so interested in a spooky book set in East LA in a Latinx community of brujxs. Like how cool is that???

It didn't disappoint! I wish there were more books like this one - that touch important and heavy topics like trans representation, culture and tradition, loss and mourning, inclusion and exclusion, and that do so in a manner that is genuine, believable, and at its most basic, entertaining. I felt myself tearing up a bit and found myself laughing throughout a lot of the book.

Yadriel is such a great character and experiencing his inner monologue throughout the book and the way he relates to his identity, family, and community was written in a great way. I fell in love with the characters and could see them as real people, not fictionalized figures for the sake of telling a good story. Yadriel and Julian's relationship felt natural, organic, and was just so cute. The book was so hard to put down.

I loved getting brought into the brujxs community and loved that the story took place around the Dia de los Muertos festivities. It had beautiful imagery - it would make for a great movie or tv show. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone and I can't wait to read more of Aiden Thomas' books!
