I was so excited to finally read The Games Gods Play. On paper, it seemed like the perfect 5-star read for me. I love Greek mythology, fantasy, and romance, so this should have been everything I wanted.
In the end, it was good, and I’ll definitely continue the series, but it didn’t quite blow me away. The world-building was solid, and the way the Greek gods were integrated into the story was interesting, especially the idea of the Crucible and how the characters navigated it. However, the tone of the book felt more like YA than adult, and it reminded me a lot of Percy Jackson. While that would’ve been fine for younger characters, I expected something a bit more mature, especially since this was marketed as an adult romantasy.
The romance between Lyra and Hades was another area that didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I wanted more chemistry, more buildup, and definitely more spice. It felt like their relationship was underdeveloped, and for a romantasy, I was hoping for more tension and emotional depth. The attraction between them didn’t seem to have the weight I was looking for.
I’m sitting here a few days after finishing the book and can’t clearly recall the ending, which is a bit telling. It wasn’t a bad book—I liked it, and the premise was strong—but it just didn’t live up to my expectations. I’m still curious to see where the series goes, so I’ll keep reading, but this one didn’t leave me as hooked as I’d hoped.
