The Dark Awakening by D.L. Blade
5.0
I would never in a million years have guessed that this is Blade’s debut novel because it’s done right and it’s done well. The reader gets to know the main character and her world pretty well before she discovers she’s a witch and witches, vampires, etc. are real. Even before she discovers life isn’t what she thought it was, her life’s fairly complicated so there’s never a dull moment.
Character development is fantastic with advanced characters throughout, who are complex and true to themselves. Mercy’s world, as a character, is well done as well. Plenty of things readers can easily relate to, despite the paranormal aspect.
Continuity is on point; you won’t find yourself questioning anything, yet might still find yourself surprised by a few details before you’re through.
Editing/proofing are well done, no issues to distract from the reading experience.
Overall -
This is a really great book to get lost in. I found myself missing it horribly when I’d step away, as it really sucked me in. There are characters you’ll love, find yourself rooting for, and maybe one or two you’ll love to hate. I was really invested, and found myself trying to figure out whether I trusted some of them. I also didn’t predict the outcome of this book, and I predict EVERYthing I watch and read. For one thing, I was too engrossed in the moment, to make predictions, but there also was a twist I didn’t see coming. It was executed perfectly in a way that made me absolutely need more, without being a cliffhanger.
I rarely rate anything 5 stars these days, but that’s because anyone is rarely able to hold my attention that well AND surprise me so… I’m going to go ahead and call this one: 5 stars.
