Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

Shadow and Bone encases you in a world of magic, war, extravagance, and darkness. It makes you feel like the sun is kissing your skin, while feeling tears as deep as the ocean for the characters.

We travel on this journey as Alina Starkov - a mapmaker soldier, who was weak and clumsy. But as she's sent into the darkness of the fold, her power shines through. Not knowing what she was for so long, she is dragged off to a land of opulence and extravagance like she hasn't known before. But she is alone, without her childhood friend.

The Darkling - a powerful Grisha (magic folk) second in command only to the King - thinks she's the key to the future. As Alina's power grows, she looks to destroy the darkness hovering over the country. But can she without help?

I watched the series before reading, and there are various differences - one being this book only following Alina, no side stories showing through.

It is definitely worth a read even if you've seen the series, and it keeps you hooked and entertained. Reading this was as welcoming as the warm, soft sunshine glow that the Sun Summoner can create.

I've noticed this book doesn't have a lot of positive views, and perhaps watching the series first created a better impression, but I absolutely enjoyed it.
I can't wait to read the next two books in the trilogy.
