Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir by Akwaeke Emezi

challenging dark emotional sad medium-paced

5.0

Akwaeke writes so powerfully I honestly don’t even know where to begin with this memoir. Whenever I read their writing, I feel like I’ve been transported somewhere new and exciting and almost otherworldly. There were many times where I found myself pushing back against their ideas and the concepts they explored, which gave me the space to reflect about what truths I hold for myself and this world and where those might be faulty or based in fear. This was an expansive novel that transcended the genre in ways that make me so excited to continue to read their art.
