We Need to Do Something by Max Booth III
5.0
Eric LaRocca meets Ian Reid. This whole book was a fever dream
My bookclub, House of 1000 Books spent way too much time picking this apart. So go listen for all my thoughts.
- How did you feel reading from an unreliable narrator pov?
- How long were they in there? Her phone battery lasted and no one starved so it wasn’t 4 days. But time isn’t real.
- Was the Father and brother the same person? Both (almost) died by snake; shared a name. Father was only nice to the son. They both died of poison!! The son got it from the snake, the dad from the alcohol wipes.
- Baby/birth motif. Why was it relevant?
- Is Amy a real person? Was the ritual real? Did the dad talk to her on the phone? If not her, then who?
- The ending….?? Shook.
- The Alcohol ism!!
- The family is obviously very broken so I initially thought the premise was them being forced into close quarters and they all just kinda fought and fixed their relationships. Didn’t expect the supernatural ritual shit.
- Keeping the ritual ambiguous and a secret for a long time!! And just her attachment to her phone.
- Mel’s parents suck clearly so she is so codependent with Amy. I couldn’t even tell if they had a long relationship or barely know each other?
