Tehlor Kay Mejia is the new & improved Rick Riordan of today's kids! Beautiful writing that doesn't shy away from wrestling with folklore, being a parentified child who has to grow up and take on adult responsibilities (while her family doesn't do this on purpose, but it's the reality of circumstances), crushes, changing friend group dynamics in middle school, and racism and police bias and brutality. This is both a fun adventure into magic and folklore in the classic Percy Jackson style, but doesn't shy away from issues like racism that kids witness and experience in their towns and schools, but approaches it at a grade appropriate level. I think this book will make a lot of kids feel seen and not talked down to, while also being a fantasy escape.

(I'm also super attached to the MC since I related to her interests, family, and experiences when I was that age).
