Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh

adventurous challenging dark
  • Strong character development? Yes

5.0

This was such a brilliant character study into being a member of an insular facistic cult, and the processes of radicalisation and deradicalisation.

The narrative is from Kyr's perspective. She is 17 and has been raised as a soldier her whole life. She strives to be the best and will not be dragged down by anyone around her. She knows her role, her destiny.

From the beginning, Kyr's narration makes clear when she truly believes what she is thinking and when she needs to rationalise or stop her thoughts if they stray from the rules of Gaea, the last vestige of "true" Earth.
