I thought this book was remarkable! Filled with hope and despair and thoughtful reflections of where we have been and where we can go as it relates to the climate crisis. Willa was such a compelling character, her backstory firmly informed the actions that unfold over the course of the novel. I thought interspersing the chapters with snippets of Eleutheria’s history made the concepts of colonization and the quest for “freedom” at the expense for others especially salient. My only kind of complaint is that I wished this story was just told chronologically instead of in two different timelines, but that’s pretty minor and more of a personal preference. This was just an absolutely lovely novel that displays what the future could hold if we are brave and loving enough to make bold changes.
Graphic: Death, Drug use, Suicide, Violence, Death of parent, and Colonisation
Moderate: Abandonment
