Karachi Vice: Life and Death in a Contested City by Samira Shackle
5.0
This book will show you what happens when political violence, murder, and bombings become the tools of political parties and regime change. All power relies on violence, and there is no space between the 'ruling' party, terrorist extremists, cartels, the mafia and the government-enlisted military and police.
And, as we see through the eyes of the individuals profiled in this book, it is the millions of Karachi residents who suffer needlessly. The citizenry is destined for unfulfilled possibility, their lives shortened and lived under trauma, fear, poverty, disease and famine.
No form of peaceful democracy or civic infrastructure can emerge, and one of the largest cities in the world is also one of the most dangerous and unlivable.
Truly an eye-opening book, and an impressive piece of narrative reporting I will not soon forget. Recommend.
