This autobiography was absolutely amazing. I rarely blow through books anymore, let alone nonfiction ones, but I tore Assata: An Autobiography apart like it was a good meal and I hadn’t eaten in days.
Shakur’s writing is incredibly vivid and intense and brought light to the intense issues within the ‘justice’ system in amerikkka and even the issues within social justice oriented communities. She masterfully used narratives from both her childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood and from the moment she was arrested for the murder of an office and on through the trials and prison-stays that followed.
I was blown away by how engaging and beautiful her writing was, and it taught me a lot more about social justice than I already knew. I’m really thankful I got a chance to pick this book up and I’d absolutely recommend that you do, too.
