I think I may have liked this more had I eyeball read it rather than listening to the audiobook. The voice actress reads very slowly, particularly when reading the male voices. I listened to the book on a faster speed and STILL it was like the men were all talking sloths.
Anyway.
The story was fun to read. It had some lulls, but pushing through was worth it for the most part. I liked the main character. I especially liked every scene Death was in (that was a weird sentence). Would’ve been a-okay with him being present 24/7 (aaaand another weird sentence). It’s a bit insta-lovey, so there’s that.
I’m terrible at solving any sort of mystery, as I tend to accuse every character we meet on the first page we meet them (law and order? I don’t know her), so I had fun going on the journey to solve the murder in this one.
I do wish we could’ve gotten to know the characters on a deeper level. I’m not sure if it was just product of this being YA (it is YA, right? Or does it just read that way…? Eh.) or if the author wasn’t interested in fleshing anyone out. Maybe that’s going to happen in book 2…?
(Why did I use so many parentheses in this review?)
TW for animal lovers—There’s a part within the first couple of chapters (I can’t remember specifically where) with a baby bird. It’s a sad scene. The death is painless for the bird, but it is on-page. I got choked up and wished I would’ve been prepared for it. So, here you go. ❤️
