Gay Bar: Why We Went Out by Jeremy Atherton Lin
4.0
this was pretty solid!! i really enjoyed the lacing of personal memoir along with queer history, and i thought his voice was pretty strong and unique. it definitely could’ve benefited from some more diverse takes, but i did appreciate Lin’s discussion of race and occasional inclusion of people other than gay men.
the narrative was relatively easy to follow but i also enjoyed the somewhat ephemeral and non-linear form it takes, as well as the way it interlaced with themes of the nature of community and place and culture.
