The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne

RECOMMENDED!

I read this book over vacation in San Francisco, and I LOVED it. I was grateful for our trips on the Muni so I could get some reading time on the train and the platforms, even though I looked silly with my big library copy. The writing is so good, and the story was super compelling for me. There's a lot here: adoption, homosexuality, the church, Ireland's political and cultural landscape. At times, it was heavy and sad, but there's a lot of humor and good will to offset it. It was fascinating to read this book while I was in San Francisco because the contrast between intolerant Ireland and inclusive SF stood out starkly. I'm still rolling this story around in my head, and I'm sure it will stick with me.
