The Wood at Midwinter by Susanna Clarke

4.0

Merowdis Scott is a funny young woman who talks to the trees and animals in the woods near her home. It's in the woods where she is most at home. One day when a figure emerges from the shadows of the woods, Merowdis's life changes shape and direction — a life better suited to her true nature.

The Wood at Midwinter is as sweet as it is brief — full of magic that has soft and hard edges. The illustrations are perfect by Victoria Sawdon, fully encapsulating the melancholy tone from Clarke.
