The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Volume 2 by Beth Brower, Beth Brower

3.0

Okay, this one tested me a little bit. Stretched the bounds of my suspension of disbelief a tad.

Emma just has so many handsome and intriguing men in her life who seem to show a very specific focus towards her (The Tenant, Young Hawke, Islington, Roland, Jack) that it seems to make up almost 80% of her social circle! Mary and Arabella, her female friends, are by contrast seemingly only present around the edges and only as window dressing or plot devices.

There was also SO much whimsy in this. I don't believe that Islington would attend the meeting of the Janes. I don't believe they would ever invite him in the first place. Would they really have called Islington "Duke" to his face instead of "Your Grace," given that they are by no means of the same social standing? I don't believe Jack and I don't believe the Jane Eyre heist.

The line between charmingly offbeat and distractingly zany is being dangerously danced upon.
