The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

2.0

This was a rough re-read. There is no doubt that Oscar Wilde is a delicious writer. His words melt on my tongue - each sentence is beautifully crafted and visceral on so many levels. But this story is brutal. The offensive Jewish caricatures, the deeply sexist ways that the female characters are written as either ugly dowagers with brilliant minds, or beautiful child-like ingenues with romantic and "useless" minds, Lord Henry's manipulative gaslighting - it's all a bit unbearable. I respect the importance of this book in Queer History, but as a standalone book, I really hated it.
