Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5.0

After a slow start I am now hell bent on barging into everyone’s room proclaiming they need to read this twisted book.

With chilling suspenseful notes of the likes similar to Get Out, The Haunting of Hill House, and the familial insaneness of Crimson Peak, Mexican Gothic is an equal worth wild horror thriller novel.

With a slew of amazing characters, a charming and lovable lead female, a gorgeously spooky setting, and the softest, sweetest romance, this story enraptures the senses and makes you want to know all the morbid details. It deals with racism and toxic masculinity while proving time and time again how the females of the story drive the plot forward and carry all the importance.

Additionally, the softness of this slow budding romance that played such a subtle role until the end was set up against a background of “traditional” masculinity and assault. Further twisting the standard fairytale/ folktale gender roles and pushing Nomeí to be the damsel that not only saves herself but the people she loves as well.

Some of it is guessable, but it in no way lessens the enjoyment of reading nor takes away from the excitement and everything else going on. And like fine wine I’m certain this one will just get better with time and in rereads.

P.s This deserved a epilogue!
