I love how this picture book took changes with the format, flipping the pages to create depth and urgency and movement. I love how the father's fear was multifaceted: fear for your child, fear for how others will treat your child, fear for how others will exploit the good this world has to offer. I love how Nen wasn't transformed into a human at the end. This is a Little Mermaid story, but I love that the love between Ernest and Nen was about who they were, how they saved, comforted, and loved each other, and wasn't "rewarded" with gaining similar bodies at the end.
