To me, this book feels like reading two separate stories at the same time. Both stories are quite enjoyable, but it’s a little weird to flick between them.
I was definitely more invested in Katrina’s story. I enjoyed the fact Shizuka initially is unbothered by the fact Katrina is trans, but she is rightly outraged at society as soon as she realises the way Katrina is treated. I wish this story was developed further, and was maybe a little darker.
I think I would have enjoyed the donut alien lady’s story more if it was separate and developed more like a long way to a small angry planet or legends and lattes.
I was a little confused by some of the characters. Sometimes they’d be really passionate about something, and then change their mind for no reason. Or they’d do something that seemed completely out of character all together.
Overall I found it a confused, but quite enjoyable read. The characters were mostly wholesome and the talk of music (and video games) was very moving. Despite all the negatives I have listed in this review, I genuinely loved reading this book.
