Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer
5.0
I’ve always been fascinated by the Mormon church, so of course this book caught my eye. I was surprised, once I started reading, how much focus was paid to FLDS sects; it ended up being fascinating to see how these fundamentalist groups emerged. Krakauer’s continual weaving of LDS history alongside the descriptions of current FLDS belief systems really showed how the original beliefs morphed into what they are today.
I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone who likes true crime (the murders described in the book, both current and historical, are horrible and unbelievably sad—so keep that in mind), history, or just Krakauer’s style of writing.
