Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

5.0

You know how there are books on shelves at the store that you would never pick up and buy for yourself? This is one of those for me. I don't think I would have been interested in reading Eliza's story. But I subscribe to OwlCrate, and Eliza showed up in the May 2017 box.

I absolutely love this book! [a:Francesca Zappia|7009633|Francesca Zappia|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1413677497p2/7009633.jpg] does a wonderful job capturing the emotional roller coaster that is the teenage girl. Even though I'm well past my teen years, I felt like I could relate to her in some way throughout the whole story. The realism of living in 2016 and '17 is fantastic! The fandoms, forums, online community pressures, etc.: they were all hit with perfect accuracy. I guess it helps that Zappia publishes online. :)
I think one of my favorite bits of the whole novel is the use of the sea monsters. They evolve with the characters; their symbolism morphs drastically from beginning to end. Speaking of: the character development in this novel is to die for! I don't think I've seen such fantastic writing and character growth in a very, very long time.
One of the things that turns adults off of young adult fiction is the predictability. I read YA almost exclusively. Trust me when I say that there was only one little piece of the plot that was predictable, and the anticipation helped with the movement. Every other twist was shocking and unexpected!
