I read it for my English class.
Oh dear, this one was a rollercoaster ride, I was practically inhaling the whole book. I don't think I've been this invested in a book for a while. This is also one of those rare books I marked with sticky notes (heavily)!

You can justify anything if you do it poetically enough.
I'm not very familiar with drama (the theatrical kind), BUT did I enjoy it? Absolutely.
It's been so fun reading, because the book uses these nuances that are usually associated with Shakespearian literature, I guess. I also love that this all happened in a poetical way.. I feel like the characters were living through a whole ass screenplay. I'm sure that those who have more knowledge about theatre plays notice more of those nuances, but I found it still quite fascinating.
Now, our main character Oliver Marks.. I feel so bad for him. The whole book was just building tensions and stress up until everything just exploded. Oliver served ten years in prison, TEN YEARS, for a murder he might have committed (you have to read the book to find that out *wink*).
What is more important, that Caesar is assassinated or that he is assassinated by his intimate friends? … That,’ Frederick said, 'is where the tragedy is.
The truth only comes out after he serves his sentence and only because he decides to tell detective Colborne the story, if he promises to keep it to himself. The story itself was wild. The murder happened and suddenly everyone was playing a character, on stage and off stage. Truly, they were already doing that before the beginning of their end, but still. (This literally felt like watching a house burn down and having no way to stop it.)
When did we become such terrible people?
Maybe we’ve always been terrible.
Oliver was treated like a side character his whole life and now he ended up as.. I don't even know, he could fit in every category - villain, hero etc.
I mean, we don't know what happened in the end, because it was left open ended. That's the beauty in it, isn't it? I get to imagine what happens, even though I won't get confirmation, if things actually went that way.
But that is how a tragedy like ours or King Lear breaks your heart—by making you believe that the ending might still be happy, until the very last minute.
