The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf
mysterious
2.5
A decent mystery following multiple timelines and POVs, before / after the brutal murder and kidnapping in a small town.
Even though it was incredibly predictable, the story at the heart of this book was still good. I liked how the different POVs connected, and the tension slowly ramped up as the book went on and the climax was suitably exciting. The setting was also great, a house in the middle of nowhere during a snowstorm? Sign me up! But I just didn’t think the writing was that good—honestly, this seems to me like a first draft.
And don’t get me wrong, it would have been a fantastic first draft, but as the final product? I just found it a bit lackluster, particularly the parts from Wylie’s POV. It was just a little awkward, and too matter-of-fact in places. I don’t know, maybe other people don’t care and I’m just being picky, but it felt way too generic to me, with no descriptions that really stood out, and unrealistic or boring dialogue.
