A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
dark

medium-paced

When dealing with a demonic entity, always have an army of geese. This reads so different to Kingfisher's other books that I felt like I'd stepped into a Francis Hardinge novel, and I did slog a bit through the middle. However. Stick around because you will not be disappointed.
This has some dark themes of child abuse, and it constantly gives us a glimmer of hope for escape in Hester, a woman whose age I do not know, but is said to be older. Cordelia's mother is persuing Hester's brother for marriage, but Hester isn't the pushover she appears to be.
Kingfisher's themes of found family and strong friendships are present here, and the ending was so wild it fully pulled me back into their world, which is dark, twisted, and has the worst horses I have ever had to deal with. Nightmare inducing.
