The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré

3.0

I did not know what this book was about before I got it. I don't think I have ever heard of the author. I like to buy books based on the things I like, but also wildcard books that I have no clue of the content. Sometimes I love a novel that I would have never chosen and sometimes I find an author that I should avoid. This was on the upper end of the middle of the scale.

I found this book difficult to read; partly because the subject matter was pretty heavy but mostly because the book is written in broken English. I understand why it had to be that way for the story but it made it very difficult to read. In the end I had to kind of relax my eyes and understand the meaning of the sentence, not read every word. And that is not the way I usually read so it took me a while to get the hang of it.

The subject matter, without any spoilers, was heavy and made me very angry. Almost all of the men in this novel are garbage humans. Some of the women too, it has to be said, but it just made me grind my teeth and mutter to myself the whole way through. I ended the book tense, not uplifted. I would recommend this book to people who like to read something different and can separate out the trauma from the rest of the story. Just writing about it is making me cross so I am obviously not one of those people.
