Perfect book to finish on a rainy day. Emery lives on a tiny island, which bears the scars and memories of the past. When her old flame, August, returns, skeletons that were buried begin to come out, and not everything is as it seems.

The vibe of this book was so good. A slowburn mystery, with a dreary oppressive atmosphere. I want to visit this island so bad—the stereotypical locals (drunk cop, suspicious older ladies, everyone knows everyone’s business), tourist town with witchy elements, whole town employed by the one big industry.

It followed quite a few little tropes that are common in the genre, but it did it so well—it was dark, and heartbreaking, and the anxiety about finding out what actually happened the night of the fire crept over me so quietly, I didn’t even realize how tense I was until it was over. But damn it was good. Beautiful story with great characters and setting.
