Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

"Race is a social concept, not a scientific one."

THIS NEEDS TO BE REQUIRED READING! Seriously! There are people that I would like to tie to a chair and force to read this book!

My biggest takeaways:
- Hearing in detail what the Nazis did to strip the Jews from human rights and citizenship is really fucking sad considering what is happening in Palestine and what Trump has been trying to do for so many U.S. citizens.
- I never quite understood the full detail of the 'Oscars so white' outrage until reading this, specifically, the chapter detailing how the oppressed were (and still are) used for entertainment but are still expected to make way for the dominant caste (white people) regardless of how mediocre their opponent/peer/colleague/etc. is.
- The scapegoat chapter hits hard because I can think of so many examples where people/groups were/are scapegoated.

Highly recommend reading 'Poverty, by America' by Matthew Desmond and listening to the 'Broken Harts' podcast as additional works.
