La Belle: Dame Sans Merci by Celine Callow
4.0
(Copy gifted by author in exchange for an honest review)
Isabella is essentially just a bad ass bitch. Who doesn’t want to read about a boss ass bitch?? She is cut throat (almost literally!) and she takes no prisoners. It was so interesting to read about a strong independent woman who is also actually an unlikable character. I mean, I would not want to be Isabella’s friend, but I would love to have her in my corner if she was capable of friendship. She only cares about herself and it was actually so interesting to watch her do whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted and not care about the consequences. I lived vicariously through her.
Emma provided balance. She was the character you could feel for. I found myself desperately wanting her to gain some of Isabella’s attitude so that Albert would get what was coming to him. I can’t wait to see what she has planned next, even if I think she needs to be more brutal.
I haven’t confirmed with the author, but I can only assume that part of the inspiration for the book would be a poem by Keates of the same title. It is a classic English poem about a fairy who condemns a knight to an unpleasant fate after she seduces him with her eyes and singing. It also inspired many paintings and early examples of a femme fatale.
I cannot wait to see what happens in the next instalment. I believe it is the first part of a five part series so there is lots of content to keep you busy!
