Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me by Richard Fariña
3.0
I thought this was fine, pretty familiar as something from or stemming from the Beat style of writing. It's not a style I particularly like. I read the book because I saw it at a used bookstore and recalled Fariña's name from the dedication of Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. I picked it up out of curiosity, mostly. I hadn't known Fariña previously other than in that dedication. The book had an introduction by Pynchon, so it appealed to my sense of curiosity about what Pynchon would say and what kind of book Pynchon would be game to introduce.
It's a very funny book but is also sort of horrifying in places. I would recommend it to somebody who likes Beat-style work or maybe to somebody who likes Pynchon.
