Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

4.0

Beautifully written, with complex characters and it captures perfectly the arrogant and ego of your years at University. Spending all night talking and arguing about anything and everything regardless of whether you are qualified to speak on the subject. Rooney perfectly describes messy and complex relationships and the hidden vulnerability that leads to seemingly cold and hurtful attitudes. This touched on some important points, mental health, marriages, self-harm, endometriosis, it did it sensitively for the characters and outsiders, but I think would leave readers suffering from these things without a sense of help. While interesting and engaging I think at times too much of the author comes through in the written and it feels self-indulgent. But this is balanced by the brutal honesty of the character's self-reflection that has to be semi-autobiographical and that is to be praised.
