Why We Eat (Too Much): The New Science of Appetite by Andrew Jenkinson

4.0

I really enjoyed reading this book and I learned a lot. As somebody who has been obese almost my whole life and as a person who is a year out from weight loss surgery, a lot of the information in this book made sense to me. My only issue with it was after essentially saying restrictive fad diets don't work and that they do more harm than good, the answer is to cut out all wheat, sugar, and corn, from your diet. Do some but not too much exercise, sleep for 8 hours a night and cook from scratch at all times. Again, I'm not doubting the science but removing massive swathes of food from your diet is a restrictive diet. Also unless you are rich both in money and in time, the lifestyle changes needed may not be possible. Just the hours that I work alone means that I cannot exercise, sleep 8 hours, and cook from scratch with the time I have available. It is also massively more expensive to eat the types of food advised.

So in the end this book made me depressed. When I win the lottery I'll be able to conquer my weight forever. In the meantime I'll just struggle along like everyone else. It did reassure me that I did the right thing having weight loss surgery though. I do really recommend this interesting book.
