You, Again by Kate Goldbeck
5.0
THIS IS THE ROMCOM OF THE FUCKING CENTURY. this single-handedly gave me hope for all traditionally published romcom’s when i had literally given up on them. because when i tell you this book made me LAUGH?!? like a hyena out loud in a way i’ve NEVER laughed at a romcom before? and it also brought a realistic romance? biiiiiiitch.
now, both main characters are flawed but that's what makes them perfect in my eyes. ari is a bisexual aspiring comedian who is anti-relationship but pro-sex and we love to see it. i love that she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to show it. the way she’s unhinged, unfiltered, and ICONIC. i have never related more to a character. she was definitely giving avoidant attachment and honestly, same lol. josh was tall, dark, handsome and a fucking chef? UGH. and his broody asshole persona yet hopeless romantic demeanor was the contrast in a man i didn't know i needed lol.
their dynamic off the bat is hilarious; they complemented each other so well. the banter between them was everything - like THIS is the standard for good banter now. miss goldbeck has dethroned emily henry (which i never thought would happen) as queen of banter. ari and josh matched each others dry and sarcastic humor. and yeah, they were both truly chaotic. but they felt REAL. they spoke to each other and interact the way two adults in our world actually would. no bullshit, no filter. it was so refreshing to read! and the way they had a tendency to overthink things, to try to leave before getting left, being vulnerable yet still having one foot out the door..holy fuck this was so relatable.
as the story progresses, i appreciated that no external forces are what caused problems in their relationship. it was all internal. she didn't want to lose herself in anyone again and he’s a walking trainwreck but they both know they are basically soulmates. the "right person, wrong time" trope hit hard. UGH real life shit. they’re both a fucking mess LOL but my god they were meant for each other.
yeah, this had ruined all other romcom's for me. this was perfection.
