I’m so mad at myself for not reading this sooner. It was everything I was hoping it would be and more. Was it the scariest book ever? No - it didn’t need to be. The characters were so well written and I truly cared about them which was crucial to this story. The supernatural/psychic elements were really interesting and quite creepy at times. Jack’s alcoholism was written well and watching him become obsessed with the hotel and eventually consumed by was very disturbing to see. The paranoia and psychological horror was done perfectly. It was tense throughout but especially the last 100 ish pages - I felt so many emotions and it was really gripping. I think it was justified in its length. There were some slower parts that were used to build the characters and the world but I really enjoyed them because of the quality of the writing. I absolutely loved how it ended and it was more explosive (haha) than I expected. The epilogue made me cry. Truly a masterpiece and now one of my favourite books ever.
