4.0

Typical YA novel with a 'weak' heroine, mix in questionable authority figures, dragons, a power structure that is clearly not set up to hide ANYTHING, did we mention dragons? Yeah. Dragons.
I read this via the audio book while captive on two 16 hour drives
Overall reco: Personally, I only enjoyed this book because my husband and I were in the car together and were ruthlessly picking it apart and making fun of it. That said, we got about 25% into the book and while we were making fun of it, we were enjoying it. We actually couldn't wait to get back to it and finish it. We immediately downloaded the 2nd book. The spice took forever but was pretty descriptive. I was expecting flower language, but was happy that it wasn't that.

Plot: 5/5
Spice: 2/5
Characters: 4/5

(The Good)
For all the making fun me and my husband did for the whole book we still got into it. We made predictions and waved red flags but I still cheered like children when things we've her way.
I see the love for Xaden, I understand the love for him.
Spice was great! If you are looking for something after The Maas Court books, this is a nice step up in spice. But was also still nothing like the other shit that is out there. Good spice for Romantasy I guess.

(The Bad)
The plot is very, very, very predictable. Good news, if you've read any other book you can probably see just about everything coming. If you haven't read a lot of YA or fantasy style novels some of these tropes are new and you will totally be surprised. (I want to stress that even thought I mark this as bad, its not that bad and NOT why I gave it only 4 stars. So don't ready it because of this.)
this is why I gave it 4 stars: I Hate Violet. Hate her. She's annoying and painful and I thought was 14-16 based on her behavior. I should point out I have in the last year decided that YA is probably not for me because I tend to hate the FMC. She's better than some FMC's but jesus christ.
