As soon as I started this book, I knew it had the potential to be a 5 star. And it did not disappoint - it was better than I was hoping it would be. It literally scared me, I could feel my heart beating in my legs at one point… It started out intense and basically maintained that level throughout. Even during the parts where not much was happening there was still an atmosphere of dread. I loved the setting - it was cold, vivid and isolated. The history behind the Road of Bones was dark and gritty. The writing was really good and the descriptions made it feel very immersive to read. I loved the characters. This book is pretty short and you only get 80ish pages to get to know the characters before things start going wrong; I genuinely cared so much about them that it was hard to read about what happened. Yes it did make me cry. Teig and Prentiss were great and I adored their friendship. Kaskil and Nira were interesting individuals and I loved that there were characters from that region of the world in the book. I loved all of the folklore and the plot was a lot more interesting than I was expecting. The descriptions of the wolves and other beasts were chilling. It was scary, specifically the middle section. The tension was high and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was graphic, brutal and sad. I honestly can’t put it into words how much I enjoyed this book. The ending was strange, ambiguous even - and I loved it. I wouldn’t have wanted it to end any differently honestly. Amazing.
