Bottle of Lies: The Inside Story of the Generic Drug Boom by Katherine Eban
informative
medium-paced
5.0
This book was a slow build, but once it hooked me, I couldn't put it down!!! I literally read a whole plane ride instead of sleeping. I work in the pharma industry, but I've never worked on generics, so I was shocked at what was revealed as the book unfolded. @katherine_eban is an investigative journalist, so the information was well-researched, properly cited (and could be cross-referenced) and I trust that the details provided were factual. The fact that most of these companies have been able to continue on relatively untouched (to me, a large fine isn't enough) boggles my mind. I know it shouldn't be surprising, but the regulatory authorities completely disappointed me. They had ample opportunity to strongly condemn blatant fraud but instead decided to cower in the face of outside pressure. The protection of patients is paramount, and this book has me hesitating on taking generics at all. If you're in the industry, especially in research, this should be required reading. HIGHLY recommend!!!
