The Windrush Betrayal: Exposing the Hostile Environment by Amelia Gentleman

challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

This is a very important book. The inhumane treatment of the Windrush generation is something everyone in the UK should take some time to learn about.

I appreciated the author’s recognition that what happened was designed to happen, that it wasn’t just a some accident caused by improperly formulated policy.

I liked the author’s dedication to making the unknown ‘illegal immigrant’ (even though they weren’t illegal at all) into real human beings with real lives. I also appreciated how they made sure to point out that it’s not just ‘good immigrants’ that we should want to help, and in fact that narrative can be harmful.

The author also takes the time to mention numerous other examples of how the hostile environment is ruining people’s lives.

Every page contains a new horror, and even more distressing is the realisation that for some people, none of this will seem unexpected.

Well researched and accessible, this is one of the best non-fiction books I’ve read.
