Every Time You Hear That Song by Jenna Voris

4.0

With all of its Dolly Parton/Taylor Swift country vibes wrapped up in a warm blanket, Every Time You Hear That Song is the undercover breakout queer book that I wasn’t expecting. Written in alternating POV’s, the past and present collide when 2 girls who want to make a life for themselves realize what they would be leaving behind.

Darren Purchase is a HUGE fan of Decklee Cassel, country music superstar. And as the funeral of her idol airs on television, they also unveil the long-awaited time capsule with the last album she recorded with her writing partner, Mickenlee Hooper, who disappeared from the limelight many many years ago. As the capsule is opened, they find it empty which leads teams of fans on a scavenger hunt that will end in a cash prize of 3 million dollars.

Darren recruits a friend to drive her, but it’s her knowledge of the idol that helps them to solve riddles before anyone else can. Along the way, we get to know the characters on a deeper level and find out that the star she knows everything about was actually hiding secrets of her own…

This was a fun, albeit sad, look into what could have happened to any person who found themselves in the spotlight. Sacrifices are made for super-stardom and some of those choices you can never come back from.
