Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
5.0
Type of read: Commuter Read.
What made me pick it up: One of the February Tennessee R.E.A.D.S prompts is to read a book with an amateur detective. The description got me and after listening to the first chapter I was hooked.
Overall rating: I needed a book to get me out of my ACOTAR hangover and 'Dark Places' was absolutely the book to do so. There is so much going on within these pages (or for me audio tracks) and Flynn does a spectacular job at keeping things organized and well-written. I had a love-hate relationship with the characters and that (for me) is what keeps me engaged in a storyline. I liked that certain portions of the book weren't forced and while I did figure out the big reveal, I didn't know the why or how and that's what kept me reading. I would 100% recommend 'Dark Places,' especially if you're coming off another book hangover or need something to get you out of a funk; however, my recommendation would come with disclaimers as there could be some triggering material.
Reader's Note: 'Dark Places' includes themes of death, murder, abuse, assault, alcoholism, drug use, sexual misconduct with a minor, child sexual assault, and graphic retellings of murder scenes and satanism.
