Little Prisons by Ilona Bannister

5.0

Little Prisons is set in an apartment building in London and highlights the strength of four women inhabitants navigating their own personal struggles. It’s about the importance of community in a time of crisis—how it can provide a sense of purpose, belonging, support, and provides a safety network to those in need. The apartment setting was an interesting space to explore what can go on behind closed doors, simultaneously dissecting the sacrifice of motherhood and faith, wavering mental health, the horrors of human trafficking, and domestic violence. This is a heavy read that tenderly tackles difficult topics and is thought-provoking in the best way, forcing the reader to think about how we can all get stuck in some way that might lead us to a place we never really felt we chose. The resilience of these characters and how they come to know and care for each other is like magic on the page. This is a story that will make you both laugh and cry, have you racing through the pages, and stay with you for a long time.
