As a lesbian with a genuinely horrible relationship with my father, this book hurt. Bechdel simply expresses the pain that comes with a non-existent relationship with your father. Its truly incredible but simultaneously soul crushing because of how easy it is to relate to her.
This blend of genres works unusually well for this story, Bechdels short bursts of commentary and the quite frankly beautiful illustrations seamlessly depict the true story of the family dynamic, especially that of Alison and her parents.
I couldn't recommend this more, whilst this book won’t resolve any issues you have with your own father it will give you relatability and the representation needed as a queer person in today’s society. You will finish this book with a sense of relief knowing that others feel your pin and you aren’t alone in your struggles.
