Go as a River by Shelley Read

5.0

I absolutely loved this novel that starts in the late 1940s. Victoria has had a tragic life so far in her late teens. She has lost her mother, aunt, and older brother in an accident. She's left with a shattered father, an angry, impulsive, and alcoholic brother, and a farm to take care of. One days she falls in love with Wilson Moon, a Native American young man.

Victoria is one of my favorite characters of all time. Is she perfect? No. But she's resilient and thoughtful and someone I would want as my best friend. I wanted to see how her life unfolds, and the reader does get to see it all happen. Of course, I wanted one thing to come to fruition which couldn't possibly unless the reader had been deceived.

The writing in this novel is astounding. It's beautiful without being "lyrical" or over the top. It's clear and literal but evocative at the same time, which is my favorite.

I will pick up anything else this debut author writes without hesitation!
