I didn’t think I’d cry reading about Diet Dr Pepper but here we are. I kept putting this off for some reason or another, but finally decided to just listen to it on audio and that was a GREAT decision. John’s narration imbues his words with so much weight, I felt his passion and fear and love in a way that I’m unsure I would have captured so clearly from a page. Hearing the actual recording of the Kaua’i ‘Ō’ō bird call near the end of the book truly made me weep. This is a book with so much heart and hope and brings me back to the fear and pessimism, but also the shared community and love that marked the beginning of the pandemic. John Green is maybe a little cringe, but if that’s a bad thing then I’m also guilty cause this was the perfect book!
