The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis
4.0
Reading these in the original published order — and convinced that is the right way to go in spite of modern publishers insistence to number them chronologically. There are so many wonderful tie-ins here, all the more delightful when you have actually read the other books. Otherwise the lamp-post, the wardrobe, the house in the country, would be less extraordinary details.
It has been a very long time since I read this one. My childhood memory of it was completely distorted. Somehow I managed to merge the attic space with the between-worlds-space, so before I started I anticipated them discovering pools of magic portals between the rafters. I was very delighted to see that I was wrong about that. The in-between world is a much better device. And the attic, being a sort of in-between world in and of itself, did just fine. There is great magic here, and a great tale for youngsters, particularly in the area of wise choices over selfish ones.
Worried that this re-read will be over soon. Only one more to go.
