Behind Closed Doors was the October pick for one of my book clubs that I am a part of. It is a psychological thriller, so perfect for spooky season!

I will give a quick warning to check themes/trigger warnings for this book before you decide to read it.

My First Impression

This is the first thriller book that I have read. It is also the first time I have read a book as an audiobook. So already there was a lot going on with this read! Long story short, I am a slow reader and I procrastinated a lot so I didn't have time to actually read the book before we met, so I listened to it instead!

Since I had never read a thriller before, I didn't really know what to expect. I suspected it to be sort of spooky (since it was the book club pick for October specifically because of spooky season), but what does spooky really mean? I decided not to dwell on that too much and dove right into the book.

Getting Reading

As I started listening to the book, I was immediately drawn into the story. You can tell from the beginning that something weird is going on, but you can't really tell what. Then, out of nowhere, it hits like a truck with a twist much darker than I expected! From that point on, I was hooked!

Now, even though I was hooked and invested in the story, there were still some slow bits that I ran into. After the initial twist, it really takes off, but then I started to think "Ok, but how is the story going to change?" Everything felt like there was nothing that could be done about the situation, but even then I was rooting for a resolution! And the book did not disappoint! The resolution to the story and how it came about was so different than I expected and I absolutely loved it!

Final Thoughts

I really struggled with a rating for this one. I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars. I had 5 stars because of how much I absolutely loved the story and the twists. But I ultimately ended up with 4 stars after discussing the book with my book club and I thought about it some more. It was very good, but there were some pieces that didn't fit the more I thought about it. For example, "why, after all that time, was that able to actually happen?" I don't want to get "spoilery" so I won't say more than that. But overall I think this book is definitely worth a read!
